Predictions for 2010

Posted on January 15th, 2010 by Jaden

A new year brings further progression into future technologies and trends. Here are some predictions in the online marketing world for 2010.

E-Commerce takes over

In late 2009…December 24th to be exact, Future Shop and Best Buy both launched their Boxing Day sales to their online customers. Amazing deals on cameras, laptops, hard drives and more were announced on their websites including some exclusive web only deals that customers are unable to purchase instore. This may not be shocking, but you can be sure that it decreased the number of overnight campers on December 25th and redirected them to the comfort of their warm homes.

It is expected that retailers will follow this new trend closely in 2010 and ensure they are tapping in to their online customer databases to keep them informed and up to date on the latest deals.

Grandfather Email holds its position

Indeed email is the grandfather of online marketing and has been a consistent tool for many years. In 2010 online marketers will clutch email as the identity of their consumers and one of the best ways of getting in touch with them. Email will be integrated a lot more with social media with means to increase word of mouth, increase the use of online promotions and provide a means of tracking email metrics for social media sharing.

Real Time Search

With the advancing state of Twitter and Facebook providing its users with real time updates and information, online search queries will provide more current information. Google is already indexing twitter feeds. This will definitely change the state of organic search optimization and increase the usage of social network platforms with real time updates.

Mobile use increases – adjustments must be made

The use of mobile hugely increased in 2009 and will only grow larger in 2010. We will begin to see some big adjustments to websites and email messages that cater to the mobile community. Every retailer wants to make it easier for their clients to shop their merchandise online and mobile devices are definitely an important addition to any e-commerce website. Having information on the go is a big trend and no business should go on without customizing their website for mobile platforms.

Event planning just got easier

In 2009 we saw an increase in online invitations for events such as concerts, birthdays, conferences, etc. In 2010 we will see a further increase in the use of such online tools such as Facebook and Evite with their growing user base.

Online marketing reaches the C-Suite

The ups and downs of the recession and real estate market have many business owners thinking twice about where to spend their marketing dollars. Towards the end of 2009 we noticed that several C-level executives began to pay closer attention to digital marketing trends. This C-level attention will continue in 2010 with the smarter companies looking for an experienced strategic online marketing partner that is equally comfortable in both the online and traditional marketing worlds.
